Description

( This is a true story of an elementary school and its mascot.)In 2004, a bald eagle pair settled along the Ashley River, embodying the ideals of freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Middletons, prominent in South Carolina history, shared these values. Henry Middleton, a leader in the Continental Congress; his son Arthur, a Declaration of Independence signer; and Henry’s grandson, an American envoy to Russia, all left their mark. Another Middleton, great-grandson of Henry, signed the Ordinance of Secession. Eagle Nest Elementary became the eagles’ new home, providing marshland, a winding river, and perch trees. During the breeding season, construction was halted (Oct 1 to May 15, 2006) to protect their nesting. The Bald Eagle, shielded by the 1940 Eagle Protection Act, was once THREATENED in the lower forty-eight states. Thanks to the Department of Natural Resources and concerned citizens, this bald eagle pair now thrives, symbolizing our nation’s enduring spirit.
