Sisters Kayla (22) and Becka (18) live in Mill Run, a little railroad town high in the mountains of North Carolina. It’s been two years since aliens invaded Earth. The women survived that first night by sheer luck, but they’ve made their own luck ever since. It’s a kill or be eaten world, so their 9mm pistols are all that stand between them and gruesome deaths.
After witnessing the crash of an Army helicopter, the women and Bryson (Kayla’s on-again-off-again boyfriend) rush to the scene, finding the pilot all but dead. After Bryon is attacked and also injured, the women leave him with the pilot and cross the mountain on foot to notify the Army of their location. On base, the women discover people locked in cages; Charlie, a ten-year-old orphan; Madeline, an eloquent but fed-up widow; and Parson Philips, their very own lovable preacher from Mill Run.

That night, Kayla and Becka slip away with the parson and their new friends, but the odds of them making it home alive are slim at best. At night, ‘jackers, crazed people infested with aliens, roam the hills feeding on the living and recently dead. The women’s only hope is to reach the fortified steam engine they passed on the way into town (not to mention Caleb, the handsome young engineer Becka has her eye on). But even if they do make it, how long can they hold out in Mill Run with hundreds of starving jackers descending on the town?
